That guy is officially a bad ass but I’d bet ever ything I had on him not gunning down 175 soldiers.

His CMH citation:

Cpl. Rosser, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty. While assaulting heavily fortified enemy hill positions, Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, was stopped by fierce automatic-weapons, small-arms, artillery, and mortar fire. Cpl. Rosser, a forward observer, was with the lead platoon of Company L when it came under fire from 2 directions. Cpl. Rosser turned his radio over to his assistant and, disregarding the enemy fire, charged the enemy positions armed with only carbine and a grenade. At the first bunker, he silenced its occupants with a burst from his weapon. Gaining the top of the hill, he killed 2 enemy soldiers, and then went down the trench, killing 5 more as he advanced. He then hurled his grenade into a bunker and shot 2 other soldiers as they emerged. Having exhausted his ammunition, he returned through the enemy fire to obtain more ammunition and grenades and charged the hill once more. Calling on others to follow him, he assaulted 2 more enemy bunkers. Although those who attempted to join him became casualties, Cpl. Rosser once again exhausted his ammunition, obtained a new supply, and returning to the hilltop a third time hurled grenades into the enemy positions. During this heroic action Cpl. Rosser single-handedly killed at least 13 of the enemy. After exhausting his ammunition he accompanied the withdrawing platoon, and though himself wounded, made several trips across open terrain still under enemy fire to help remove other men injured more seriously than himself. This outstanding soldier’s courageous and selfless devotion to duty is worthy of emulation by all men. He has contributed magnificently to the high traditions of the military service.

Judging from that flyer photo, dude looks like he could still tear your head off and shit down your neck.

If you read the CMH citation I just posted, it lists the 12 (13 in the citation) that he killed in one battle, but it sounds like most were shot, not killed hand- to- hand as it states in the flyer. Not taking anything away from Cpl. Rosser. It just sounds like a story that gets better with time.

It doesn’t specifically say in the flyer that he killed 175 that day, and not every battle will be like that, but 10 engagements at those numbers would be 130.  Are those unrealistic numbers, I don’t know.

The official “13" is impressive, but I agree 175 sounds like a bit of an embellishment.

That doesn’t make him any less of a badass, though.

Wow. But t hey could have left that writeup a little more “teaser” and a little less “spoiler” (of appetites).

Oh, I didn’t think that he killed 175 in one day. Though I have zero combat experience, I just wonder if any soldier killed that many of the enemy. I suppose it’s certainly possible. And there were a hell of a lot of Chinese to shoot at.

From Wiki:

In 1968, another of Rosser’s brothers was killed in action, this time in the Vietnam War . Rosser requested a combat assignment in Vietnam but was rejected and subsequently retired from the Army as a master sergeant .

There are a handful of sniper with more kills than that. Simo Häyhä killed 500+ Russians in the Winter War with his sniper rifle, and a few hundred more with a machine gun. Vasiley Zaitsev killed over 200 people during th e Battle of Stalingrad. Chris Kyle had around 150 confirmed kills. No real way to confirm kills from machine gun fire.

That’s true, but they were snipers. And as such, I suspect they kept very accurate counts.

Yeah, it says the official count is 12. I read his claim of 175 and assumed it was from that day. For one battle, that is unrealistically high. Over the course of a war, that’s do able.

I re-read it, 175 may be over the course of the entire war. It doesn’t actually say that it was 175 plus whatever was in that one particular battle. That changes the whole thing.

I also read that last paragraph as a continuation of the CMH citation story. Makes more sense if it's over the course of the whole war.

Yeah, you can only really verify sniper kills, as there is usually a spotter there keepi ng track and verifying kills. I’m sure Simo and Vasiley’s counts were exaggerated as a way to scare the shit out of the enemy.
